"Early Bird" Brown Bear Hunts For Spring

Big Alaska brown bearWe’ll run only 4 to 5 hunts for Spring Brown/Grizzly Bear, beginning about March 15th, and ending about April 20th. We usually start out with only one hunt for the first 10 days or so, and seldom have more than two hunters in the field at any one time. Chances for success on mature males 8 foot and larger should be excellent, and most of the skulls run 24 inches and up.

We plan to base out of a wall tent or expedition style tent camp located in good denning country.  I know of several good bears that den in this general location. By camping right in the middle of this area, we’ll have a real advantage.

When hunting from airplane spike camps, we can't hunt until the next day (by law). These are winter hunts and we need clients that are tough and able to spend time in the cold and on snowshoes.

Some of the advantages to hunting so early are:

1. We are targeting the big males when they are still a little groggy from just waking up.

2. Visibility and tracking is good because much of the brush is covered  with snow.

3. Hides are generally at their very best and we seldom have to turn down a bear because of a rubbed hide.

We like to gear our hunts for success and weather can sometimes work against us in areas where the main access is by bush aircraft. I can't control the weather, but when it is decent, we often obtain success by the 7-10 day mark, and can usually get a hunter back to town shortly after that. We allow the hunt to go 14 days for the hunters benefit, to better increase his chance for success, but if all our hunts in a given year would go the full 14 days, our profit would be very small if any at all.

The price for a 14 day 1 x 1 PLUS, is $12,000, which will include air charter in and out.  Although we don't see a lot of bears on these early hunts, almost every one we see, is a taker with good fur.  We have never not had a bear to chase, on any of our hunts. I know where to look for these bears, and like to catch them immediately when they leave their den.  I would highly recommend hunters to purchase at least one wolf tag, as I think the chances of seeing some are high. There would be no additional charge if you took a wolf. Thank you for your interest!!
